Introducing PLA Cups & Lids
The Green Stripe
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is made from renewable resources and is biodegradable.
Starting May 2022, we are rolling it out to our stores in San Francisco, which means that the whole drink is now compostable (including our chewy balls).
Environmental Advantages of PLA
RENEWABLE
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is made from renewable plant starch such as cassava (like our boba), corn, or sugarcane.
CARBON FOOTPRINT
The manufacturing process for PLA is much more environmentally friendly. The process requires crops to make PLA which draws down carbon and pulls greenhouse gasses out of the atmosphere. This means carbon emissions are 80% lower than traditional plastic.
COMPOSTABLE
In a commercial compost facility, PLA will completely biodegrade into water, carbon dioxide, and composite within about 12 weeks, in contrast to traditional plastic which may take a few centuries to break down. Even then, plastic will remain in the environment in one form or another.
